    Coach of the Year
If you are so inclined, Coach PJ truly deserves to win, especially after today. Virginia Tech was lucky to catch us at the beginning of the season before Paul Johnson's coaching philosophy really took hold with the players.

    2008 Men's NCAA Tournament Pool
    (Crossposted to dlgood)

As I did each of the last four years, once again, I'll be hosting a free - for pride only - NCAA Men's Basketball Bracket on ESPN.com.

For those wishing to participate follow these easy steps:

    1. Go to ESPN's Tournament Challenge page
    2. If you do not have a free, ESPN Games ID, create an ID.
    3. Join the group LJ Bracket Challenge and create an entry
    4. Mock me and my crazy picks.

Note: The team listed as Control Bracket is simply an entry I've added in which the favored seed (not the Vegas favorite) was selected to win every game. For the purposes of seeing how our upsets deviate from expectations.

    Wake beats Duke
I will resurrect this community to say: HECK YEAH DEACONS!

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons knock the #2 Duke Blue Devils down 86-73 in Winston-Salem.

What a fun game. All 5 of Duke's starters fouled out. The Joel Coliseum was rocking like it hasn't in years. I have to give a nod to Coach K for being classy - the Duke staff was wearing black and gold, he did not ride the refs much, and compliments the Deacs in the post-game.

Whew!  Us bottom-dwellers finally got our first ACC win.

And, congrats to Maryland today!  We came close, but you did it!  It was amazing to see the Dean Dome crowd silenced.

I was curious if anyone has a picture of the GA Tech/Clemson scoreboard from the football game this past September when GA Tech won. Or knew where I might be able to find this. Thanks!

Georgia Tech 33, Notre Dame 3

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Georgia Tech didn't need a secret weapon. It had Tashard Choice. Choice rushed for a career-high 196 yards and two touchdowns and the Georgia Tech defense had little trouble with any of Notre Dame's replacements for Brady Quinn, shutting down the running of Demetrius Jones and the passing of Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen in beating Notre Dame 33-3 on Saturday.

Fighting Irish coach Charlie Weis kept his choice of starting quarterback secret until game time, hoping that preparing for three quarterbacks would make it tough on Georgia Tech's defense.

It didn't work. In fact, it almost looked as if Georgia Tech knew what was coming.

The only score for Notre Dame (0-1) came on a 24-yard field goal by Brandon Walker in the third quarter. The Irish were held to minus-8 yards rushing.

Choice, the leading rusher in the Atlantic Coast Conference last season with 1,473 yards, rushed for more than 100 yards for an eighth straight game, breaking the school record set by Eddie Lee Ivery in 1978. He scored on a 22-yard run on a direct snap and set up his other 7-yard TD -- also on a direct snap -- with a 45-yard run.

The only disappointment for Georgia Tech (1-0) was it was forced to settle for four field goals by Travis Bell, who had another one blocked. Jonathan Dwyer added a 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

    Jackets lose Dickey; Clinch returns
    Jackets lose Dickey; Clinch returns
Senior center is academically ineligible for fall semester

Summer grades are in, and Georgia Tech's basketball team lost one and gained one.

Senior center Ra'Sean Dickey will be academically ineligible for the fall semester, but the Yellow Jackets regained junior guard Lewis Clinch.

The 6-foot-10 Dickey can regain his winter eligibility with a strong performance in the classroom this fall.

Clinch, ineligible for the second semester last season for violating the school's honor code, can play this fall.

Even without Dickey, Tech coach Paul Hewitt may have more flexibility in his frontcourt, where senior forward Jeremis Smith will be joined by McDonald's All-American forward Gani Lawal and redshirt freshman Brad Sheehan. Sophomore Zach Peacock, junior Alade Aminu and sophomore Mouhammad Faye will also compete for playing time.

"Jeremis clearly, according to people in our strength program, has had the best offseason, and one of the best in our program since I've been here," Hewitt said. "Gani is going to be a factor whether he comes off the bench, or we start him."

Dickey started at center as a sophomore, but lost his job at the beginning of last season to Peacock. Dickey regained the spot and scored 21 points in a win over Duke, but scored in double-digits just three times in the final 16 games.

In other news, guard Paco Diaw has left the program, but has not yet chosen a new school, and senior point guard Matt Causey has been awarded a scholarship.

    Skip Prosser, RIP
Wake Forest University's head basketball coach, Skip Prosser, died the other day of an apparent heart attack. He was only 56.

Tributes are pouring in. The university community obviously grieves the tragic loss. The coaching fraternity is heartbroken. Dick Vitale, whose entire life seems to be college hoops, was stunned. And so on.

As those around me know, I wasn't a big fan of Prosser as a coach, but really, none of that matters right now. Ultimately, it never mattered, because as a Wake alum it has always mattered more to me that we do things the right way. (More...)

    Brackets Anyone?
Is anyone here interested in an online pool for this community for the tournament? I started one last year and will gladly do it again. Also, if you have a preferred site for setting up something like this, let me know, as I usually use Yahoo.

So... FSU, Miami, NC State, and Wake.
Hmm, Clemson, Maryland, Duke, and GT all upset. Will the upsets continue into today, or will the top-seeded teams win out? I'm excited to see if any of these teams can continue.

    By the way, 114-112? Wow.

    I love ACC basketball!!
